Liberty Prevail, 3-1, Over Toronto
|
The Philadelphia Liberty put one in the win column with an opening day 3-1 triumph over the Toronto Thunder. The crowd at Liberty Park watched Bobby Johnson put on a fine performance. The winning pitcher was Johnson, now 1-0. He tossed 5.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 6. Bill Carson closed it out for his 1st save.
The Thunder had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Liberty going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 30-year old center fielder Nick Coleman came to the plate. Coleman hit a run-scoring double on a first pitch fastball from Toronto hurler Victor Lagers. It was Coleman's 1st double of the year.
"I really like what we did out there today," Coleman said after the game.
