Starks Get Hard-Earned Win, Stop Pride, 9-8
Henry Roberts did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to spare the Hartford Pride an extra-inning, 9-8 loss to the Syracuse Starks at Stark Stadium. Roberts went 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. The win went to Mario Méndez in relief. His record improves to 2-1. Andre Witney took the loss. The third-place Starks sport a record of 28-25.

Up to bat in the bottom of the 13th, 25-year old shortstop Momoru Nakayama had a chance to be the hero. Hartford pitcher Andre Witney wanted to foil that plan. But with one out, Nakayama hit a sacrifice fly. The Starks had themselves a thrilling win.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Nakayama, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
