Virginia Beach Whales starter Miguel Martínez turned in an exceptional performance against the Asheville Highlanders at Asheville Park, resulting in a Virginia Beach win, 7-2. Martínez, now 1-1, was the winner. In 6.2 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 3, and allowing 2 runs. Jack Barr got the save, the 3rd for him this season.

Virginia Beach used a big swing from Corey Browning to get the win. The center fielder walloped a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Whales up, 4-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it changed the outcome.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Martínez told a Virginia Beach Gazette reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."

The last-place Whales bumped their record to 8-18.
