Hops Handle Rails, Nab 2-1 Win
|
The Yakima Hops got a strong performance from pitcher Ron Jackson, who stymied the Richland offense en route to a win, 2-1, at Hops Park. In 7.2 innings, Jackson surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 4. He allowed 1 run. Ray Melton finished to wrap up his 9th save.
The Rails had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Hops going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old third baseman Peyton Nelson came to the plate. Nelson hit a solo home run on a first pitch slider from Richland hurler Richard Stevenson. It was Nelson's 12th home run of the year.
"Good ballgame," said Richland manager Ludovic Fontaine. "But we came up on the short end."
The Hops raised their record to 31-19.
