Pineda Fires 5-0 Shutout for MSL Memphis
Tuesday, June 19th , 2063
Pedro Pineda of the MSL Memphis Mockingbirds was on top of his game.
The 17-year-old tantalized the MSL Panama City Piranhas with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," MSL Panama City manager Anthony Mitchell said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The MSL Memphis hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 1 hit in his complete-game effort.
Pineda told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
This year, Pineda has a 2-1 mark in 7 starts with a 4.17 ERA. He has given up 36 hits in 41 innings, struck out 31 and issued 14 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .232 batting average against him.
