The Asheville Highlanders put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Northville Eclipse in the season opener at Asheville Park. Third Baseman Kenny Peterson won plaudits for Asheville. He went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

Tom Baker chipped in for Asheville, stroking a crucial 2-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning. For the game, the pinch hitter was 1-1 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
